Top 5 VR Games Coming in 2020

by Valda Fox

The first commercially available VR headset can be traced back to 1991 when Sega planned to release Sega VR as an accessory for the Genesis, it was never released because Sega worried that people could end up hurting themselves while wearing the VR headset because the effect was too realistic. Though it has been almost 30 years since that, Virtual Reality technology only now is starting to reach its full potential with new VR headsets being released and higy quality VR games being released. This year 2020, we will see some really impressive games that we haven’t seen before in the VR gaming world. So here are the Top 5 VR Games Coming in 2020.

Half-Life: Alyx

Let’s start the Top with the most anticipated and hyped-up game – Half-Life: Alyx. This isn’t Half-Life 3, the game that Half-life fans have been waiting for over 13 years now, but it certainly is a long-waited game for all the VR enthusiasts and fans.

Velve has created Half -Life: Alyx from top to bottom specifically for VR and developers are promising to revolutionize the modern gaming with it. And we believe them. Velve in game announcement says that Half-Life: Alyx “was designed from the ground up and features all of the hallmarks of a classic Half-Life game: world exploration, puzzle solving, visceral combat, and an intricately woven story that connects it all with the characters iconic to the Half-Life universe.”

Though the game was designed for the amazing Velve Index VR headset, it will be playable on almost every major PC VR headset that has been released and that includes the popular Oculus Quest. The game will launch on SteamVR in March 23, 2020.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is a great game for all the Walking Dead fans, first-person shooter game fans and the ones who love some bloody survival-horror games and killing some zombies. This VR game is developed by Skydance Interactive and based on comic book series The Walking Dead. And you won’t have to wait for this one to get released, because it is already available since January 23, 2020 on Steam, Oculus platforms. The game will also be released on PlayStation VR later this year.

It seems like this game will be a real VR treat because Skydance promises that the game will leave its players with trembling hands. A massive open-world to explore, full of enemies both undead and alive. Deadly weapons that you must use with caution, for example if you stab a zombie with too much force it may stay stuck in its dead flesh. Or if you fire a gun out in the open there is a high chance of a zombie horde hearing you and start to head your way. Fight, attack, craft, defend yourself and form alliances or risk your reputation and break one.

Lone Echo II

This game is a real treat for those who have been interested in VR games for some time now. Lone Echo 2 is a successor of Lone Echo, a VR game released by Oculus Studios in 2017. Lone Echo 2 is said to be at least 50% larger than its predecessor.

In Lone Echo II you play the role of “Jack”, a service android on a space ship somewhere in the rings of Saturn. And you are in the future, in 26th century. The same as in Lone Echo you serve under Captain Oliva Rodes and you adventure together continues and you get to figure out what is happening in the world in 26th century. In Lone Echo you are able to play offline or choose the Echo Arena and play in multiplayer. It is not clear jet if Lone Echo 2 will have a multiplayer component too, but it is very likely.

There is no specific date of the Lone Echo 2 release, but it is said to be released some time in 2020. It will be available for Oculur Rift/RiftS.

Paper Beast

Paper Beast is a bit different VR game than others and that is why I think it deserves a spot in the TOP 5 VR games coming in 2020. The lead developer in this project is Eric Chahi who is best known for his work  on other action-adventure games like Another World (1991), Heart of Darkness (1998) and some even call him legendary. This game is special because the idea behind it and the graphics are very different from what you will see in other games. Eric Chahi says: “Some games are poetic, but Paper Beast is poetic in every aspect.”

He also says that “When you’re in the game, it might seem a bit realistic. But there is some kind of glitch or anomaly everywhere, like the cloud or later in the sky and in the storm. And these animals are made of paper or some strange materials. In the game, you should feel the pressure of big data, which is born out of data. But sometimes there’s an intrusion in this world, which is not always super cool for these animals.”

Paper Beast is a PlayStation VR exclusive game and will be released on March 24, 2020.

Phantom: Covert Ops

This game has received the award of Best VR Game E3 2019. Game is set in 1991, Eastern Wetlands, Black Sea Region. The concept of this game may seem a bit weird at first. The game is a stealth-based military shooter where you are navigating the in-world game using a tactical kayak. Yes, you are sitting in a kayak all throughout the game and the skills of paddling will be an amazing advantage. It may seem weird, but it is certainly something new and fresh and something you haven’t played before. You get to be this bad-ass special forces operative and go on missions and choose your own way to execute them.

Phantom: Covert Ops was supposed to launch in 2019, but nDreams have delayed the release date explain that “we’re committed to delivering the best stealth-action experience possible in VR. In order to do this, we’ve decided to move our release date into 2020, and we’ll be announcing more about this in the coming months”. The game will be available on Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S in June, 2020.
